Is UC Santa Barbara or Dartmouth better for economics majors?

I'm trying to decide between UC Santa Barbara and Dartmouth and economics is probably the major I want to study. Both schools seem strong overall, but I’m having trouble comparing them specifically for economics.

I’m mainly interested in which school has the stronger economics program for an undergrad who wants a solid academic foundation and good opportunities after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UC Santa Barbara gives you a large public-university economics department with more breadth and a wider campus ecosystem, while Dartmouth offers a much smaller undergraduate-focused environment with easier access to professors, tighter advising, and a stronger concentration of recruiting attention per student. For economics specifically, both are credible, but the day-to-day academic experience and the post-grad pipeline feel quite different.

Dartmouth has the stronger overall undergraduate platform for economics if your priority is close faculty interaction, small classes at the upper level, and highly visible outcomes in finance, consulting, policy, and graduate study. Its quarter system can also let motivated students move quickly through the major or combine economics with math, government, or computer science in a flexible way.

UC Santa Barbara is still a very good place to study economics, especially if you want a broader public research university setting and a lower cost option for California residents. The department is well respected, and UCSB can be especially appealing if you are interested in pairing economics with accounting, data work, environmental studies, or other strengths on campus. The main difference is that at a school its size, you usually need to be more proactive about getting to know professors, finding research openings, and standing out for recruiting.

For academic foundation alone, both can get you there. If cost is reasonably close and you want the strongest undergraduate economics launchpad, Dartmouth is the better pick. If UCSB is much more affordable and you are self-directed enough to seek out resources, it remains a smart and respected option.
