Is UC Irvine or UC Riverside better for computer science?

I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and UC Riverside for computer science and keep seeing different opinions online.

I want to know which school is generally considered stronger for CS in terms of academics, internship opportunities, and overall reputation for the major.

UC Irvine is usually viewed as the stronger option for computer science. Its CS program has the deeper overall reputation, a larger and more established computing ecosystem, and a stronger pull with employers because of its location in Orange County near a dense tech and biotech corridor.

On academics, Irvine has a broader and more developed CS environment through the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, which is one of the few standalone computing schools in the UC system.

For internships, Irvine has a real edge. Being close to Irvine, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and the larger Southern California tech market makes it easier to access part-time work, year-round internships, and alumni connections during the school year, not just in the summer. Riverside students can absolutely land strong internships, especially if they are proactive, but the surrounding local market is not as concentrated for CS roles.

On reputation, recruiters and students tend to place UC Irvine a step ahead for CS. That does not mean Riverside is weak. UC Riverside has a solid program, and some students prefer it because it can feel a bit more accessible and less crowded. But if the question is which school is more widely regarded as stronger for computer science across academics, internship access, and name recognition in the major, Irvine has the clearer advantage.
