Is UCLA or UC Berkeley more prestigious for college admissions and overall reputation?

I'm trying to figure out how people generally compare UCLA and UC Berkeley when it comes to prestige. I know both are really strong schools, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one has the stronger reputation overall.

I’m a high school student looking at both, and I want to understand how they’re viewed by employers and in academics.

UC Berkeley is usually seen as having the stronger academic and institutional prestige overall, especially in research, graduate education, engineering, computer science, economics, and the broader national and international academic world. UCLA is also extremely prestigious, but its reputation tends to feel a bit more balanced between top academics, strong pre-professional pathways, and a highly visible public profile. For employers and admissions readers, both names carry major weight, but Berkeley more often gets the edge in pure academic reputation.

That said, the difference is smaller than people sometimes make it sound. UCLA has enormous name recognition, a powerful alumni network, and standout strength in areas like film and television, life sciences, business economics, psychology, nursing, and many pre-med tracks. In some circles, especially among students and families, UCLA can even feel more desirable because of campus life, location, and brand visibility.

Berkeley tends to appeal to students who want to be associated with a place known for intellectual intensity and faculty-driven research. Its reputation is especially strong if you care about being taken seriously in academia, policy, tech, quantitative fields, or graduate school pipelines. When people talk about a school having a "scholarly" or "serious" image, Berkeley gets that label more often.

UCLA often attracts students who want elite academics without quite the same public image of intensity. It is still highly rigorous, but it is more often associated with a polished campus experience, school spirit, access to Los Angeles industries, and broad excellence across many fields. For employers, UCLA absolutely opens doors, especially in California and in industries tied to media, healthcare, consulting, and business.

So if your question is strictly prestige, Berkeley has the slight edge overall. If your question is how much that difference will matter for college admissions or employers, the honest answer is not very much for most students. Both are viewed as top-tier public universities, and your major, experiences, grades, research, internships, and network will matter more than the small prestige gap between them.
