Is UC Irvine or Tulane more fun for undergraduates?
I’m trying to get a sense of campus life beyond academics because I’m deciding between these two schools. I know “fun” is subjective, but I’m mostly thinking about how active the social scene feels, whether there’s always something happening on or near campus, and how easy it is to find people to do things with.
I’m a current high school student and I’m hoping for a place that doesn’t feel boring or isolating.

For most undergraduates asking specifically about social energy and having things to do, Tulane usually feels more immediately lively than UC Irvine. Tulane is in Uptown New Orleans, so students are close to live music, restaurants, and a city culture that naturally spills into student life. UC Irvine has plenty of clubs, events, and nearby attractions in Orange County, but the campus itself is often described as calmer, more spread out, and less built around a nonstop social atmosphere.
Tulane tends to suit students who want an easy-to-access social scene where off-campus life is a real part of the college experience. It is easier there to feel like something is always happening, whether that means campus programming, bars and restaurants nearby for upperclassmen, or city events that students actually go to. People who like spontaneity, walking or short rides to activity, and a stronger school-spirit-meets-city vibe often find Tulane more fun in the way they mean it day to day.
UC Irvine works better for students who still want plenty to do, but do not need the campus itself to feel high-energy all the time. Irvine is in a safe, polished suburban area, and students often drive to beaches, food spots, concerts, LA, or other parts of Orange County. That can be great if you like making your own plans with friends, but it can also feel quieter or more effortful if you want social life to happen around you automatically.
A lot depends on whether you enjoy urban energy versus a suburban campus with access to outside options. If your biggest worry is ending up somewhere that feels boring or isolating, Tulane is more likely to relieve that concern right away. UC Irvine can absolutely be social, but students usually need to be a bit more intentional about clubs, friend groups, and getting off campus.
