Which school has better internship opportunities: UC Irvine or Purdue?

I’m trying to choose between UC Irvine and Purdue, and one thing I care a lot about is internship opportunities. I want a school where it’s realistic to find good internships during the school year or over the summer.

I’m mainly looking at how the school’s location, employer connections, and career support affect internship access.

UC Irvine has the edge for internship opportunities, mainly because of location. Being in Orange County puts you close to a huge concentration of companies in tech, biotech, finance, healthcare, and engineering, and that makes it much easier to do internships during the school year, not just in the summer. Irvine is also close enough to Los Angeles and San Diego to widen the range of employers without needing a cross-country search.

That proximity matters in a practical way. At UC Irvine, students can realistically commute to part-time internships at firms in Irvine, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and surrounding areas, which is much harder at Purdue because West Lafayette is more isolated. Purdue absolutely has strong employer recruiting and a respected national reputation, especially in engineering and STEM, but many internships connected to Purdue are more likely to be summer-based or require relocation.

UC Irvine also benefits from being plugged into Southern California industries that hire interns at scale. The area has major hospitals, research centers, startups, established tech companies, and business offices, so there are a lot of different pathways depending on your major.

Purdue’s biggest strength is employer loyalty and on-campus recruiting, especially for engineering, computer science, and related fields. Companies know Purdue well, and its career fairs are taken seriously. But if your question is specifically about how easy it is to access internships because of location, employer density, and year-round options, UC Irvine is the more convenient and flexible environment.
