Is UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz better for students who want easy access to nature?

I’m trying to choose between UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz, and being around nature is a big part of what matters to me. I like spending time outside, hiking, and being somewhere that feels green and outdoorsy.

I want to know which campus is generally better for a student who cares most about access to nature and an outdoor atmosphere.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UC Santa Cruz puts you inside a redwood-and-coast environment every day, while UC Davis gives you a flatter college-town setting with parks, bike paths, and easier access to open farmland than dramatic natural scenery. If what you want is a campus that already feels immersed in nature, Santa Cruz has the edge. Its campus is built into a forested hillside, and students are close to redwoods, trails, and the ocean in a way Davis simply does not match.

UC Santa Cruz feels much more outdoorsy on a daily basis. The campus itself has wooded paths, wildlife, and a strong connection to hiking and beach culture. Being near Natural Bridges, Wilder Ranch, Pogonip, and coastal trails means nature is not just nearby, it is part of the student experience.

UC Davis is greener than people sometimes expect, but in a different way. It has a large, bike-friendly campus, lots of trees, an arboretum, and a relaxed outdoor culture, but the surrounding landscape is more agricultural and suburban than rugged or scenic. You can absolutely spend time outside there, but it is less about forests and ocean access and more about open space, sunshine, and an easygoing town built around bikes.

For a student who cares most about hiking, a natural setting, and feeling surrounded by the outdoors, UC Santa Cruz is the clearer answer. Davis works well if you want pleasant outdoor living and a very accessible campus, but Santa Cruz is the one that feels genuinely embedded in nature.
