Is UC Berkeley or Duke better for weather?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and realized weather is a bigger deal to me than I thought. I’m used to a pretty mild climate and want a place that will feel comfortable day to day.

Between UC Berkeley and Duke, I’m mostly wondering which one generally has better weather overall for a student.

UC Berkeley has the edge for weather if you want the more consistently mild, comfortable day-to-day climate. Berkeley stays temperate most of the year, with cool mornings, moderate afternoons, and very little humidity compared with Durham. Duke’s weather is more variable, with hot, sticky summers and a real winter season that can feel damp and chilly.

The biggest difference is humidity. Berkeley’s Bay Area climate is much drier and usually feels easier to live in if you prefer air that stays relatively crisp. At Duke, late spring through early fall can feel heavy and muggy, and that affects ordinary student life more than people expect, especially when walking across campus.

Berkeley also tends to avoid weather extremes. You usually are not dealing with snow, prolonged heat waves, or dramatic seasonal swings, though the microclimates can mean fog and cooler temperatures than you might expect from California. A lot of students end up dressing in layers because mornings and evenings can be quite cool even when afternoons are pleasant.

Duke gives you more distinct seasons, which some students enjoy, but it also brings more unpredictability. Durham can be beautiful in the fall and spring, yet summer heat and humidity are real, and winter is noticeably colder than Berkeley’s. For someone specifically seeking mild weather overall, Berkeley is the more comfortable bet.
