Is UC Berkeley or Virginia Tech better value for engineering majors?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a cost vs. outcome perspective, especially for engineering. Berkeley seems more expensive and harder to get into, but it also has a bigger name nationally.

Virginia Tech seems like a strong engineering school too, so I’m trying to understand which one usually gives better value overall for a student who cares about job prospects and return on investment.

For engineering, UC Berkeley tends to offer the stronger upside if the price is manageable, especially for students who want maximum national reach, access to top-tier research, and recruiting pipelines into highly competitive tech and engineering employers. Virginia Tech is often the better value when cost is significantly lower, because its engineering programs are well respected, its career outcomes are solid, and taking on less debt can easily outweigh Berkeley’s extra brand advantage.

Berkeley makes the most sense for a student who wants a very deep academic and research environment and is comfortable in a large, intense, theory-heavy setting. Its College of Engineering has exceptional visibility with employers, especially in areas like EECS, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and bioengineering, and being in the Bay Area helps with internships, startup exposure, and industry networking. That combination can matter a lot if you are targeting selective tech firms, graduate school, or careers where school brand opens early doors.

Virginia Tech fits students who want a strong engineering education with a more practical, grounded feel and a lower-cost path to good outcomes. It has a longstanding engineering reputation, a large and loyal alumni network, and strong employer connections, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and with companies recruiting for traditional engineering fields. For many students aiming at solid industry jobs rather than the most elite or brand-sensitive opportunities, Virginia Tech can produce an excellent return.

The cost difference is really the deciding factor. If Berkeley would require substantially more borrowing, Virginia Tech often comes out ahead on value because engineering salaries are strong but not unlimited, and debt changes the equation fast. If Berkeley is close in price, or if you want the specific advantages of its reputation, research ecosystem, and West Coast recruiting access, then Berkeley’s premium can be justified.
