Is MIT harder to get into than UC Berkeley?

I’m a high school junior comparing MIT and UC Berkeley and trying to understand how selective they are. Is one generally considered harder to get into than the other?

MIT is typically harder to get into than UC Berkeley for an applicant comparing the schools overall. MIT has an exceptionally small undergraduate class relative to the number of highly accomplished applicants it attracts, and its applicant pool is concentrated among students with very strong preparation in math, science, and technical work. Even outstanding grades, coursework, and test scores do not by themselves make admission predictable there.

Berkeley is also extremely selective, but its difficulty is less uniform across applicants. California residency can materially affect the admissions context, and the academic college or intended field can shape how competitive an application feels.

The applications also emphasize somewhat different evidence. MIT looks closely for sustained intellectual curiosity, hands-on problem solving, collaboration, and an authentic interest in its science-and-technology-centered environment. Berkeley evaluates academic achievement in the context of a large public university serving California as well as students from elsewhere, with strong attention to course rigor, performance, and the opportunities available at the student’s school.

In practical terms, treat MIT as a reach for virtually every applicant, including applicants with exceptional academic records. Berkeley should also be treated as highly selective, with the level of uncertainty depending more on residency and the applicant’s academic path.
