Binghamton vs. GWU for government jobs: which school has better career outcomes?

I'm trying to decide between Binghamton and GWU, and my main goal is to end up in a government job after college.

I know both schools have strengths, but I want to understand which one generally has better access to government-related recruiting, internships, and alumni connections for that career path.

GWU is the clearer choice for government jobs. Its location in Washington, DC puts students next to federal agencies, Capitol Hill, policy nonprofits, and contractors, so internships and part-time roles during the school year are much more accessible. That matters because many students interested in public service build their resume through repeated semester internships, not just one summer experience.

The biggest differentiator is day-to-day proximity to employers. At GWU, students can realistically intern during the week at places like congressional offices, executive branch agencies, think tanks, or advocacy organizations while taking classes. Binghamton can still lead to government work, especially through strong academics and summer opportunities, but it does not offer the same built-in pipeline to DC-based experience during the academic year.

Recruiting and campus culture also lean more heavily in GWU’s favor for this goal. Employers in the DC public sector ecosystem know the school well, and many students there are actively pursuing similar paths, which creates a more government-focused professional environment. Binghamton is a strong university and can be the smarter value choice in many cases, but for access to government-related recruiting, internships, and alumni connections, GWU has the stronger career outcomes.
