Binghamton vs Stony Brook for computer science: which is better for a CS major?

I'm trying to decide between Binghamton and Stony Brook for computer science and keep going back and forth. I know both are strong SUNY schools, but I'm mainly thinking about the CS experience itself.

I'm looking for a clear comparison of things like academics, recruiting, and overall opportunities for a CS student.

For computer science specifically, Stony Brook has the edge. Its CS program has a stronger technical reputation, deeper research activity in computing, and better proximity to the New York City tech market, which matters for internships and networking. If your decision is centered mostly on the CS department itself rather than campus vibe or broader college experience, Stony Brook is the one I’d lean toward.

Academically, Stony Brook is usually seen as the more established choice in CS. It has a larger computing ecosystem, more visible research in areas like systems, AI, cybersecurity, and data-related fields, and a stronger identity as a school known for STEM. That often translates into more upper-level course options, more research labs, and more classmates who are intensely focused on technical fields.

For recruiting and internships, Stony Brook benefits from being closer to NYC and from having a name that travels well in tech circles, especially in the Northeast. Neither school guarantees top-tier recruiting just by name alone, but Stony Brook students often have a somewhat easier time plugging into internships, alumni connections, and employer pipelines tied to software, finance tech, and engineering roles.

Binghamton is still a solid option, and some students prefer it because the broader campus life is often considered more traditional and socially balanced than Stony Brook’s more commuter-leaning, STEM-heavy feel. But if you are asking narrowly about the CS experience, Stony Brook tends to offer the stronger department-level environment.
