How does the value of Ohio State compare to Rutgers for college students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost and regional payoff: Ohio State often delivers a more traditional residential Big Ten experience and broader national visibility, while Rutgers can offer stronger financial value and employer access for students tied to New Jersey or the Northeast. Both are large research universities with lots of majors, major campus resources, and recognizable degrees. In practice, the better value usually depends less on prestige and more on your price after aid, your intended field, and where you want to work after graduation.

Academically, both can support ambitious students well, but Ohio State often feels more cohesive as a flagship campus experience. Columbus is very much built around the university, and OSU tends to have especially strong reach in areas like business, engineering, sciences, and large-scale student involvement. Rutgers has strong academics too, especially with the advantages of being near New York and Philadelphia, and some programs benefit directly from that location for internships and networking.

For campus life, the difference is pretty noticeable. Ohio State has one main-campus identity that many students think of as the classic big-college environment, with strong school spirit, athletics, and a more unified social scene.
