Ohio State vs University of Illinois for computer science: which is better for a CS major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Illinois usually offers the more established, nationally recognized CS ecosystem, while Ohio State can offer a somewhat broader large-university experience with solid CS opportunities and potentially a different cost or campus fit. For pure computer science strength, Illinois has the clearer edge because CS is one of its signature programs, recruiting in computing is especially deep there, and the surrounding academic culture is heavily shaped by engineering and tech. Ohio State is still a respected option, but Illinois is the one more often seen as a destination school specifically for CS.

At Illinois, computer science has a long-standing reputation, a very large and active technical student community, strong faculty presence, and a recruiting pipeline that is especially robust for software, systems, AI, and related fields. Employers know the program well, and that matters when you are looking for internships and first-job credibility. The peer environment can also be a real advantage because you are surrounded by many students who are deeply focused on computing.

Ohio State has real strengths too. If the cost difference is substantial, that can absolutely make Ohio State the smarter personal decision.
