Is Northeastern or UMass Amherst worth the money for a college degree?

For many students, the question is not which school is good, because both are, but whether Northeastern’s added opportunities are worth the extra debt.

UMass Amherst is often the smarter financial choice if the price difference is large, especially for in-state students. It has a solid national reputation, a big alumni network, strong departments in areas like engineering, computer science, business, and the sciences, and a traditional campus experience that many students prefer. Employers know UMass, and for many majors your results will depend more on what you do there than on the name difference.

The key issue is debt. If choosing Northeastern means taking on a level of loans that will shape your post-college life for years, UMass Amherst is very likely the better value. If the price gap is manageable for your family without major borrowing, Northeastern can be worth it because its structure creates unusually direct career opportunities.
