Is Northeastern or Syracuse better for journalism?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list and both Northeastern and Syracuse keep coming up when I look at journalism programs. I know they both have strong reputations, but I want to understand which one is generally considered better for journalism overall.

I’m especially trying to figure out which school would give a stronger path into reporting, media internships, and job opportunities after graduation.

For journalism specifically, Syracuse is usually the more established and more directly recognized option. The Newhouse School has a long-standing national reputation in journalism and mass communications, a very large alumni network in media, and strong training in reporting, broadcast, digital, and magazine work. If your main goal is to build a career squarely inside journalism, Syracuse tends to carry more weight.

Syracuse makes the most sense for the student who wants a journalism-centered college experience from day one. Newhouse is one of the best-known communications schools in the country, and that matters in a field where alumni connections, faculty industry ties, and name recognition can open doors to internships and early jobs. It is especially attractive for students interested in reporting, broadcast journalism, sports media, political coverage, or multimedia storytelling.

Northeastern is appealing for a somewhat different student: someone who wants journalism but also cares a lot about blending it with experiential learning, business, tech, data, or broader professional flexibility. Its co-op system is a real advantage, especially if you learn best by working in professional settings and want multiple substantial experiences before graduating. Being in Boston also helps with access to media organizations, nonprofit newsrooms, public affairs work, and related communications roles.

For pure reporting preparation, Syracuse usually has the edge because the journalism identity is more central and the school is more famous specifically for that field. For internship structure and career experimentation, Northeastern can be very attractive, especially if you are open to paths adjacent to journalism such as media strategy, digital content, audience work, or communications.

So if you are asking which is better overall for journalism in the traditional sense, Syracuse is the clearer answer. If you want journalism in a setting that strongly emphasizes work experience and cross-disciplinary career options, Northeastern becomes more compelling.
