NYU or Dartmouth for campus life?

I’m trying to figure out what day-to-day student life is actually like at each school, especially outside of academics. NYU seems really city-focused and Dartmouth seems more traditional and residential, but I’m not sure how that changes the social scene and how connected students feel to campus.

For someone choosing mainly based on campus life, which school is usually the better fit?

For campus life, Dartmouth usually feels much more cohesive and traditional, while NYU feels independent, city-based, and self-directed. Dartmouth has a true residential campus in Hanover, most students are deeply tied to campus routines and school traditions, and social life is concentrated around other students. NYU’s social scene is woven into New York City, with students spread across residence halls and the surrounding neighborhoods, so campus life can feel exciting but less unified.

Dartmouth tends to fit students who want a strong sense of belonging to one place. A lot of day-to-day life happens on or near campus: residence halls, student organizations, traditions, outdoor activities, and a social culture where people regularly run into each other. The school’s smaller, more residential environment also help create a tighter community. If feeling connected to classmates and having a shared campus identity matters a lot, Dartmouth has a real advantage.

NYU fits students who like freedom, variety, and the energy of a city more than a classic campus bubble. Social life often depends on how proactive you are, because there is no enclosed campus and students can have very different routines. Some people love that their life includes downtown Manhattan, internships, concerts, restaurants, and neighborhoods beyond the university. Others find that it takes more effort to build a consistent friend group or feel a strong school-wide community.

For someone choosing mainly on campus life, Dartmouth is more often the satisfying choice because the social environment is built around the college itself.
