Which is better for internships: Middlebury or Northeastern?

For internships specifically, Northeastern has the clearer edge. Its co-op system is built into the undergraduate experience, and the school’s location in Boston gives you access to a very large internship market during the academic year. If your top priority is getting structured, frequent, resume-building work experience while still in college, Northeastern is set up for that in a way few schools are.

Northeastern tends to fit students who want career preparation woven directly into their schedule. The biggest advantage is not just that internships exist, but that the school has an established process for helping students pursue them through advising, employer relationships, and a campus culture where work experience is expected rather than optional. That can make it easier to graduate with substantial experience, especially in business, engineering, tech, health-related fields, and communications.

Middlebury makes more sense for a student who wants a classic liberal arts college environment and is comfortable being more self-directed about internships. It has strong advising, a loyal alumni network, and very good outcomes, especially for students interested in fields like international affairs, languages, policy, environmental work, education, and some finance or consulting paths. But internship access during the school year is less built around the campus experience, partly because of its rural Vermont location.

That does not mean Middlebury students struggle to find internships. Many do excellent summer internships, and the school’s funding, alumni support, and faculty relationships can be very helpful. The difference is that at Middlebury, you are more likely to piece together opportunities through summers, winter term, and networking, whereas at Northeastern the institution is more directly designed around sustained work experience during college.
