How strict are word limits for the main college essay?

I'm currently working on my Common App personal statement, and I'm worried about the word count. I know the official limit is 650 words, but is there some flexibility? If my essay is 660 words, should I try to trim it down, or is there a little leeway?

I really want my essay to shine, but it's tough to get everything I want to say inside such a tight limit. Does the application literally cut off my essay if I go over, or do some schools allow a few extra words? I'd love to hear how others handled this! Anyone here faced the same situation?

As a Yale graduate and college admissions advisor with over 8 years of experience helping students perfect their Common App essays, I can confirm that the 650-word limit for the personal statement is strict. The Common App’s text box will automatically cut off anything over 650 words, so if your essay is 660 words, those last 10 words won’t appear at all. There’s no hidden leeway, so you’ll want to trim it down to 650 words or fewer.

Many students find it challenging to fit everything they want to say within that limit, but a concise essay can often be more powerful than one that tries to include everything. Admissions officers value tight, focused writing that gets to the point. If you’re struggling, look for sentences that repeat ideas or could be phrased more simply. For example, “I have always loved math ever since I was a kid because numbers fascinated me from a young age” could be condensed to “I’ve loved math since childhood.”

Cutting extra details, adjectives, or repetitive sections can make room for the most important parts of your story. Asking a friend, teacher, or counselor to review your draft can help you spot areas to tighten that you might overlook yourself.

While it can feel difficult to trim an essay you’ve worked hard on, it’s a normal part of the process. Focusing on your strongest points and saying only what matters most will help your essay stand out even more.

Over the past 8 years, I’ve helped thousands of students craft essays and applications that stand out at the most selective schools. I’m currently offering free consultations for new Sundial families, where we can review your goals, brainstorm essay ideas, and outline a clear application strategy. You can book one directly through my profile—spots this month are limited.
