How does Indiana University Kelley compare to UC Berkeley for undergraduate business?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for business and keep seeing people mention them for different reasons. I’m a high school senior deciding where I’d have the better overall experience for an undergraduate business degree.

I want to understand how Indiana’s Kelley School and UC Berkeley compare in terms of reputation, recruiting, and overall value for a business major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Kelley gives you a more straightforward, undergraduate-focused business experience from the start, while Berkeley offers the broader prestige and Bay Area access of a top global university but with a more complicated path and a less purely business-centered undergraduate setup. Kelley is built around undergrads in business, with very visible recruiting pipelines and a large alumni base in finance, consulting, marketing, and accounting. Berkeley carries exceptional name recognition across industries, and its location creates strong ties to tech, startups, and adjacent business roles.

On reputation, Berkeley has the stronger overall university brand and a very powerful reputation with employers nationally and internationally. That matters, especially if you may want flexibility beyond traditional business fields or you are drawn to tech, economics, data-heavy roles, or eventually grad school. Kelley, though, has one of the most respected undergraduate business brands in the country and is taken seriously by major employers, particularly for students who use its career services and selective workshops well.

For recruiting, Kelley tends to be more intentionally structured for business undergrads. Its ecosystem is designed to move students toward internships and full-time roles early, and students often find it easier to plug into clubs, workshops, and employer pipelines specifically meant for business majors. Berkeley absolutely places very well too, but the process can feel more self-directed and competitive, especially because many ambitious students there are chasing the same internships across business, consulting, finance, and tech.

On value, the answer depends a lot on cost and residency. If Berkeley is in-state for you, that can be hard to beat given the school’s brand and opportunities. If you would pay substantially more for Berkeley than for Kelley, Kelley can be the better value because it delivers a very strong undergraduate business experience with excellent recruiting outcomes of its own.

If the question is purely undergraduate business education, Kelley is one of the clearest, most student-centered options. If the question is broader long-term brand, cross-industry prestige, and access to the Berkeley ecosystem, Berkeley has the edge. My lean would be Berkeley if the price is reasonably close, and Kelley if Kelley is meaningfully cheaper or if you want the more direct, business-first undergraduate experience.
