Indiana University vs Purdue University for business: which is better for an undergraduate business degree?

I'm trying to decide between Indiana and Purdue for business, and I keep seeing both schools recommended for different reasons. I want to study business as an undergrad and I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the stronger overall reputation and better opportunities for business students.

I’m not looking at a specific major yet, just trying to get a sense of how the two programs compare in general.

For a general undergraduate business degree, Indiana University is the more established and better-known choice. IU’s Kelley School of Business has a stronger national reputation in business education, a much larger alumni network in business, and more breadth across majors, recruiting, and undergraduate business programming. Purdue is respected too, but its overall identity is more tied to engineering, technology, and quantitative fields than to business in the broadest sense.

IU tends to fit the student who wants a classic business school environment from day one. Kelley is built around undergraduate business in a very visible way, with structured advising, student organizations centered on finance, consulting, marketing, entrepreneurship, and accounting, and a campus culture where business recruiting is a major part of student life. If you are still undecided within business, that breadth matters because Kelley gives you more obvious pathways to explore different areas before narrowing in.

Purdue makes more sense for the student who wants business in a more technical, analytical, or STEM-connected setting. Its business offerings can be especially appealing if you are interested in areas like business analytics, supply chain, operations, industrial management, or anything that overlaps with engineering and technology. On Purdue’s campus, the strongest cross-campus energy often comes from those technical fields, so students who like that environment can find strong opportunities there.

In terms of pure business reputation and employer recognition for undergraduate business, IU usually carries more weight. Kelley has long been one of the most prominent undergraduate business schools in the Midwest and nationally, and that shows up in recruiting pipelines, alumni presence, and the overall visibility of the program. That does not mean Purdue business students lack opportunities, but the business brand itself is simply more central at IU.

If you want the school where business is one of the flagship experiences on campus and you are looking for the broadest undergraduate business platform, Indiana University has the edge. Purdue is the more compelling option when you want business tied closely to quantitative problem-solving and a campus atmosphere shaped heavily by STEM.
