Should I choose Indiana University or Tulane University for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and cost versus intimacy and location. Indiana University gives you a large flagship experience with extensive majors, major Big Ten school spirit, and usually more flexibility if you are still exploring. Tulane offers a smaller, more contained campus experience in New Orleans, with a distinctive civic engagement culture, easier access to professors, and a city that becomes part of daily student life in a way Bloomington usually does not.

Students often describe IU as more traditional and expansive. There are far more student groups, a very visible sports culture, and strong name recognition in areas like business through Kelley, music through Jacobs, and public affairs through O'Neill. That can make IU especially appealing if you want lots of options, a classic college-town atmosphere, and a broader range of social scenes.

Tulane tends to feel more self-contained academically but more outward-facing socially because New Orleans is so central to the student experience. The university is especially known for public service, public health, and interdisciplinary work, and many students are drawn to the mix of academics and city engagement.

Another real difference is student culture. IU often feels more Midwestern, traditional, and broad in personality, while Tulane can feel more curated, urban-minded, and somewhat more niche. Some students love IU because it offers room to reinvent yourself within a very large community; others prefer Tulane because the smaller campus can make it easier to build close relationships quickly.

If cost is meaningfully lower at IU, that matters a lot and would be hard to ignore unless Tulane is clearly a much better personal and academic fit. If the prices are close, the decision usually comes down to whether you want the breadth and energy of a large public university or the smaller, city-centered experience Tulane is built around.
