How does the social life at George Washington compare to UVA?

I’m trying to figure out what day-to-day social life feels like at these two schools, since they seem really different. George Washington feels more city-based and UVA seems more traditional and campus-centered.

I’m mainly trying to understand the overall vibe students talk about, like how easy it is to meet people and whether the weekend scene feels active.

They do feel quite different day to day. George Washington has a more independent, city-driven social life where students spread out across D.C., while UVA has a much more centralized, traditional college social scene built around a defined campus and a strong school culture. At GW, a lot of socializing happens through friend groups, student orgs, internships, and the city itself; at UVA, it is easier to feel the campus-wide weekend energy because more students are plugged into the same place and rhythms.

GW tends to fit students who like flexibility and do not need the whole student body to be doing the same thing at the same time. Because it sits in the middle of D.C., weekends can mean restaurants, concerts, museums, internships, political events, or going out in different neighborhoods, which is exciting but also more fragmented. People often describe GW as social if you take initiative, but less naturally cohesive than a classic residential campus.

UVA usually appeals more to students who want a stronger built-in community and a more visible campus social scene. The school has a very recognizable student culture, a lot of school spirit, and a weekend environment that feels more concentrated around campus, student organizations, events, and the broader Charlottesville college scene. It is often easier to run into people you know, make plans spontaneously, and feel like there is a shared social calendar.

For meeting people, GW can take more deliberate effort early on because students are balancing busy schedules and often move between campus and the city. UVA often makes casual connection easier simply because the campus is more self-contained and social life is less dispersed.
