How does campus life compare between George Washington University and Tufts University?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel like a better fit day to day, especially in terms of student life, social scene, and overall campus vibe. Both seem appealing for different reasons, but I can’t tell how different the experience actually feels.

I’m mainly looking at what it’s like to live there as a student, not academics.

Tufts usually feels more like a traditional residential college community, while George Washington feels more integrated into city life on a daily basis. At Tufts, most undergrads spend a lot of time on and around the Medford/Somerville campus, so the student body can feel more concentrated and campus-centered. At GW, student life is heavily shaped by being in downtown Washington, DC, where the city itself functions as a major part of the social environment.

One big difference is physical setting. GW’s Foggy Bottom campus sits in the middle of an active urban neighborhood, near government buildings, internships, restaurants, and public transit, so daily life often involves moving through the city alongside non-students. Tufts has access to Boston, but its own campus has more of a defined college atmosphere, with quads, residence halls, and a clearer sense that students are living in a shared campus bubble.

The social scene also tends to feel different. Tufts is often described as having a tight-knit, involved student culture where clubs, dorm communities, and campus events play a central role in meeting people. GW can be more decentralized socially because students are spread through an urban campus and may spend free time off campus, at internships, or exploring DC, which can make the experience feel more independent but sometimes less cohesive.

Day to day, that means Tufts may feel easier if you want a stronger built-in community and a campus that naturally pulls students together. GW often appeals to students who like having constant access to a major city and are comfortable creating their own routine in a less enclosed environment. In practice, Tufts often feels more like living at a college, while GW can feel more like living in a city while attending one.
