Is George Washington University more prestigious than Northeastern University?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for college applications and I keep seeing different opinions online. Both seem strong, but people talk about prestige in very different ways depending on where they live and what they care about.

I want to understand how these two schools are generally viewed compared with each other.

Neither school has a clear across-the-board prestige edge. In practice, George Washington and Northeastern are both well-known private universities, but they are respected for somewhat different reasons: GW is especially associated with politics, international affairs, policy, and its Washington, DC location, while Northeastern is widely recognized for co-op, career preparation, and strong momentum in fields like business, computer science, and engineering.

For a student drawn to government, public policy, political communication, nonprofit work, or international relations, GW often carries a distinctive kind of name recognition. Being in DC matters a lot here. Employers and families who care about internships on Capitol Hill, federal agencies, think tanks, or advocacy work may view GW as having a particularly valuable brand because it is so tied to that ecosystem.

For a student focused on structured career outcomes, internships integrated into the academic path, and fast-rising visibility in professional fields, Northeastern tends to get more attention. Its co-op model is one of the main reasons people talk about it, and in some regions, especially the Northeast and among employers in tech and business, Northeastern may actually feel more prominent than GW.

A lot of the disagreement you are seeing online comes from geography and field of interest. In and around DC, GW often has stronger cultural and professional visibility. In Boston, New England, and career-oriented conversations about applied learning, Northeastern may sound more impressive to people.

So if by prestige you mean traditional political and policy-world recognition, GW may have the edge in that niche. If you mean current buzz, employer-facing reputation, and broad momentum with career-focused students, Northeastern is often the school people bring up first.
