Georgetown vs. William & Mary for political science: which is better for undergrad opportunities?
I’m trying to decide between Georgetown and William & Mary and I want to study political science. Both seem strong, but I’m mostly interested in which one has better undergraduate opportunities for someone who wants to get involved in politics, internships, and research.
I’m a junior trying to think ahead about where I’d have the best overall experience for polisci.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus environment: Georgetown puts you in Washington, DC with unusually direct access to politics, policy, embassies, think tanks, and Hill internships during the school year, while William & Mary offers a smaller, more undergraduate-centered setting where it can be easier to build close faculty relationships and step into research or campus leadership early. For political science specifically, Georgetown’s location is a real advantage. William & Mary is excellent academically, but its opportunities are more concentrated around faculty mentorship, campus institutes, and Virginia state government rather than the full national and international ecosystem Georgetown students can tap into every week.
At Georgetown, the School of Foreign Service and the broader DC network create a very high ceiling for undergrads interested in politics. Students regularly intern during the semester, attend policy events, hear from public officials, and connect with alumni working across government and advocacy. Even if you are not in SFS, political science students benefit from the same city and institutional connections.
William & Mary’s strength is that undergraduates are the center of the academic experience. It has a strong political science department, serious emphasis on teaching, and good access to research, especially if you want professors to know you well and involve you in projects. Its location in Williamsburg also gives you some proximity to Richmond and Virginia politics, and the university has a long tradition of producing students interested in public service and law.
If your question is strictly about undergraduate opportunities tied to politics, internships, and real-world exposure, Georgetown has the edge. William & Mary can be a better experience for students who want a more intimate campus and close mentoring, but for political science with maximum access to internships and political networks while still an undergrad, Georgetown stands out more clearly.
