Georgetown or George Washington for internships: which is better for student internship opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige and alumni reach versus sheer day-to-day proximity to downtown D.C. internship sites. Georgetown tends to offer the stronger long-term networking advantage because of its name recognition, especially in politics, international affairs, law, consulting, and finance, and its alumni network in Washington is unusually deep. George Washington, though, is embedded right in the middle of D.C., so the logistics of interning during the semester can be easier and more common in everyday student life.

For internship access alone, Georgetown usually has the edge in terms of who you can reach and how its brand travels. Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, political environment, and alumni presence make it especially powerful for Capitol Hill, think tanks, policy shops, NGOs, and internationally oriented work. Employers in those spaces know Georgetown well, and that matters when students are competing for selective semester internships.

GW is still very strong for internships, and in some cases students take advantage of D.C. location earlier and more frequently because the campus is so central. It has a well-established culture of working in federal agencies, nonprofits, campaigns, media, and public affairs during the school year. If the question is not prestige but practical access to offices by Metro or even on foot, GW does very well.

What makes Georgetown stand out is that it combines D.C. access with a more powerful alumni network and a reputation that can open doors beyond one internship cycle. For students aiming at highly network-driven fields, that difference is real. My read is that Georgetown gives a stronger overall advantage for finding competitive internships, while GW remains an excellent option and may feel more convenient on a weekly basis.
