Emory vs. Notre Dame for pre-med: which is better for medical school preparation?

I’m trying to decide between Emory and Notre Dame and I’m interested in pre-med. Both seem strong academically, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one gives students a better path to med school.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally better for pre-med preparation in terms of academics, advising, and opportunities that help students get ready for medical school.

For pre-med specifically, Emory generally has the stronger edge. Its direct connection to Emory School of Medicine, Emory Healthcare, and the CDC in Atlanta gives undergrads unusually strong access to clinical exposure, research, and medically related internships. Emory also has a long-established pre-health advising system and a very large concentration of students aiming for medicine, which means the infrastructure is built around that path.

Academically, both schools are rigorous and can prepare you well for medical school prerequisites. Emory is especially strong in biology, neuroscience, public health, and biomedical research, and its location makes it easier to find hospital volunteering, shadowing, and lab roles during the school year. Notre Dame also offers solid science departments, strong advising, and research access, but it is not as embedded in a major medical hub in the same way.

On advising, Emory tends to be more pre-med intensive and specialized because so many students pursue health professions there. That can be a plus if you want lots of structured guidance, committee support, and peers on the same track. The tradeoff is that Emory’s pre-med culture can feel more competitive. Notre Dame may feel somewhat more balanced and community-oriented, which some students prefer if they want strong support without quite the same pre-health concentration.

For opportunities that matter to med school applications, Emory usually wins on volume and proximity. Access to Emory Hospital, nearby clinics, public health work, and CDC-related experiences is a real advantage. Notre Dame students can absolutely build strong med school profiles too, but it may take more intentional effort to line up the same density of clinical experiences.
