What is the campus feel like at Emory vs NYU?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more like home as a student. I’ve heard Emory and NYU both have strong academics, but they seem really different in terms of day-to-day life.

I’m mostly trying to understand the overall campus vibe, like whether it feels more traditional or more city-based and how social the environment is.

Emory and NYU feel very different day to day. Emory has a more traditional residential campus with green space, quads, and a defined college community in Atlanta’s Druid Hills area, while NYU feels fully embedded in New York City with no real enclosed campus and much more of an urban, independent vibe. If you want a classic campus atmosphere where students spend a lot of time on school grounds, Emory is usually the closer fit. If you want the city itself to function as your campus, NYU is much more that experience.

At Emory, student life tends to be centered around residence halls, campus events, clubs, and a tighter undergraduate community. Even though Atlanta is nearby, the campus itself feels separate enough that students often describe it as calmer, more cohesive, and easier for building a strong campus identity. Socially, it can feel more contained and community-oriented, with more of the traditional college rhythm.

At NYU, the energy is faster and more decentralized. Students are spread across Greenwich Village and surrounding buildings, and social life often happens through friend groups, clubs, classes, restaurants, internships, and the city itself rather than on a single enclosed campus. That can feel exciting and freeing, but also less automatically communal, especially if you want a built-in campus scene.

A lot comes down to what feels like home to you. Emory usually fits students who want a residential, leafy, somewhat quieter environment with strong academics and a defined campus. NYU usually fits students who like independence, constant activity, and a city-first lifestyle where daily life is closely tied to New York rather than a traditional campus bubble.
