How should I choose between Dartmouth and MIT for college?

I’m trying to decide between two schools that both seem great but very different. One feels smaller and more traditional, while the other seems way more focused on engineering and STEM.

I know the right choice depends on fit, but I’m not sure what factors matter most when comparing two colleges like this.

Choose based on the kind of academic life and campus culture you want every day, not just on prestige. Dartmouth is a smaller Ivy with a strong undergraduate focus, a classic residential campus in Hanover, and more flexibility for students who want a broad liberal arts experience alongside majors in economics, government, science, or engineering. MIT is much more intensely STEM-centered, located in Cambridge, and best for students who are excited by a highly technical environment, hands-on problem solving, and being surrounded by people who live and breathe science, math, and engineering.

A useful first question is how sure you are about your academic direction. If you already know you want engineering, computer science, physics, or another technical field and want the deepest possible exposure, MIT has a clear edge in both curriculum and culture. If you want strong academics but also more room to explore humanities, social sciences, languages, or a less specialized path, Dartmouth may feel more balanced and less narrowly centered on STEM.

The second factor is environment. Dartmouth is in a rural college town, with a close-knit campus, outdoors culture, and a more traditional residential feel. MIT sits in one of the most academically dense urban areas in the country, with easy access to Boston, research labs, startups, and cross-registration opportunities nearby.

Also think about social style and pace. Dartmouth tends to feel more intimate and community-driven, with school traditions and a strong alumni network. MIT is collaborative but intense, and many students describe the workload as demanding even when the culture is supportive.

If you are torn, imagine two ordinary Tuesdays. At Dartmouth, would you be happier with a broader mix of classes and a more classic campus experience? At MIT, would you be energized by a technically rigorous schedule and constant STEM momentum? The better choice is the place where that everyday version of college feels more exciting, not just more impressive.
