Dartmouth vs Brown for a relaxed campus atmosphere

I’m trying to figure out which school feels more laid-back day to day. I’ve heard both Dartmouth and Brown have strong academics, but I care a lot about whether the campus culture feels stressful or more relaxed.

I’m mostly looking for the overall vibe outside class, like how intense students seem and whether people still have a balanced social life.

Brown usually has the more relaxed day-to-day atmosphere. Its open curriculum gives students a lot of freedom in choosing classes, there are no general education requirements, and the grading culture is often seen as less rigid because Brown uses options like S/NC and does not calculate a traditional GPA for internal use. That combination tends to make the academic environment feel more self-directed and less pressured in everyday student life.

Dartmouth can also feel friendly and close-knit, but its culture is often more structured and socially intense. The school has a more residential, insular feel in Hanover, which can make campus life feel all-encompassing. Social life is active, especially around traditions and the house community, but some students experience that as energetic rather than laid-back.

Outside class, Brown generally has the reputation for being more visibly chill, quirky, and independent. Students often describe the vibe as intellectually serious without being overly competitive in an obvious way, and Providence gives people more options to step off campus. That can help create a balanced feel, especially for students who want academics to matter without dominating the whole social atmosphere.

Dartmouth’s balance looks different. People do have fun and strong friendships, but because the campus is smaller and more isolated, the social scene can feel more concentrated. For some students that is warm and easygoing, while for others it feels harder to escape the dominant campus rhythm.

If your main criterion is which school feels more laid-back overall, Brown is the safer bet. Dartmouth fits better for someone who wants a tight community with lots of school spirit and an active campus-centered social life, even if it can feel a bit more intense.
