Case Western vs George Washington campus: which has a better campus environment for undergraduates?

For campus environment alone, Case Western usually feels more like a traditional undergraduate campus, while George Washington feels more like living in the middle of a city. Case Western’s main undergraduate area in University Circle is fairly walkable and centered around quads, academic buildings, and residence halls, so day-to-day life tends to feel more contained. George Washington’s Foggy Bottom campus is also walkable, but it is woven directly into downtown Washington, DC, so it feels less like a separate campus and more like a neighborhood with university buildings throughout.

At Case Western, students usually get a clearer campus boundary and a stronger sense that they are “on campus.” University Circle is attractive and full of museums, Severance Music Center, and cultural institutions, and nearby Little Italy gives students places to eat and hang out.

At George Washington, daily life is much more urban and active. Foggy Bottom is compact enough to walk to class easily, and students have immediate access to Metro stops, restaurants, internships, and DC neighborhoods. But because GW’s buildings are integrated into city blocks, some students feel it lacks the cohesive, enclosed campus feel they expected from college.

From an undergraduate lifestyle perspective, Case Western is usually better if you want a contained, classic campus setting with city access nearby. George Washington is better if you want the city itself to be part of your campus experience every single day. The biggest difference is not walkability, since both are walkable, but whether you want a campus that feels distinct from the city or one that blends almost completely into it.
