Which is better for city life: Carnegie Mellon or Tufts?
I’m trying to figure out which school would feel better if I care a lot about being in or near a city. I know Carnegie Mellon is in Pittsburgh and Tufts is near Boston, but I’m not sure how city access, walkability, and the overall urban feel compare for a student.
I’m mainly trying to understand which one would give me a stronger city-life experience day to day.

Tufts will usually give you the stronger day to day city-life experience, especially if by “city life” you mean easy access to dense neighborhoods, public transit, and Boston/Cambridge activities. Its Medford/Somerville campus is not fully urban in the same way as a downtown campus, but it sits right next to Boston. Carnegie Mellon is in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, which is lively and student-heavy, but it feels more like a distinct university district than constant big-city immersion.
For daily walkability, both are good in different ways. CMU is right by Pitt, museums, Schenley Park, and a cluster of cafes and restaurants, so student life is very walkable around campus. Tufts has a more residential campus setting, but Somerville, Davis Square, Cambridge, and downtown Boston are easier to fold into everyday life because the transit network is stronger and the surrounding metro area is denser.
If you want a campus that still feels somewhat separate but gives you quick city access, Tufts probably wins. Boston and Cambridge offer more neighborhoods, internships, concerts, food spots, and car-free exploration within a short ride. At CMU, Pittsburgh is accessible and Oakland is active, but the city experience tends to feel a bit more occasional unless you deliberately leave campus more often.
Tufts is better for a stronger everyday urban connection, while Carnegie Mellon offers a more self-contained campus experience within a city neighborhood.
