Is Carnegie Mellon more prestigious than UVA for college admissions and job recruiting?

I’m trying to compare Carnegie Mellon and UVA because both seem strong, but people talk about them very differently. Carnegie Mellon is known for being especially strong in some fields, while UVA has a big reputation overall.

I’m mainly wondering how prestige compares in a general sense for admissions and recruiting, since that’s what I hear people mention most.

In a general sense, neither school is simply “more prestigious” across the board. Carnegie Mellon tends to carry stronger prestige in specific high-demand fields, especially computer science, engineering, drama, design, and some quantitative business areas, while UVA has broader name recognition as a highly respected public flagship with a strong overall academic reputation. For admissions, Carnegie Mellon is usually seen as more selective overall, but that selectivity is heavily driven by certain colleges and majors; for recruiting, the better answer depends a lot on what field you want.

If you are talking about tech, quantitative roles, engineering, or anything closely tied to CS, Carnegie Mellon usually has the edge in employer perception. CMU’s School of Computer Science and engineering programs are especially prominent, and recruiters in software, AI, robotics, and related industries know that. In those areas, CMU can have a stronger signal than UVA.

If you mean general business, consulting, finance, policy, law-school placement, or a broad national alumni network, UVA is extremely strong and often just as valuable or better depending on region and employer. UVA also has the kind of public-flagship visibility that many people instantly recognize.

For “prestige” in everyday conversation, UVA may feel more broadly known to the general public, while CMU may be more admired in specialized professional circles. For admissions, CMU often looks tougher because some of its most sought-after programs are exceptionally competitive. For job recruiting, the winner is usually major-specific: CMU for technical and specialized fields, UVA for broader cross-industry recognition and certain business, government, and preprofessional paths.
