Is Brown or Harvard more prestigious?

Harvard is generally viewed as more prestigious than Brown in the broad, name-recognition sense. It has the strongest global brand of the two, is more often treated by the public as the most elite or iconic Ivy, and tends to carry more immediate recognition with people outside academia and outside the U.S. Brown is still highly prestigious, but its reputation is usually a bit more specific: intellectually creative, student-centered, and especially known for its Open Curriculum.

In everyday perception, if someone asks which school has more raw prestige, most people would say Harvard. That comes from its long history, famous graduate schools, global visibility, and the sheer number of well-known alumni and public figures associated with it. Brown is respected at an extremely high level too, but it does not usually occupy that same top-of-mind cultural status.

That said, prestige is not one-dimensional. Brown often has a stronger reputation among students who care about academic freedom, interdisciplinary study, and a more collaborative, less formal campus culture. In some circles, especially among people who know undergraduate education well, Brown’s distinctive academic model makes it feel more appealing even if not more “prestigious” in the conventional sense.

So if you mean public perception, employer recognition, or international name value, Harvard usually comes out ahead. If you mean how admired a school is by people who value undergraduate experience and intellectual independence, Brown can be just as impressive, just in a different way.
