Brown vs Stanford for computer science: which is better for an undergraduate CS student?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and Brown and Stanford keep coming up for computer science. I know both are strong, but I’m trying to understand which school is generally the better fit for an undergrad who wants a strong CS experience.

I’m mostly thinking about the quality of the CS program, research opportunities, and overall undergrad experience for someone interested in tech.

For undergraduate computer science, Stanford is generally the stronger choice if your top priorities are depth in CS, access to cutting-edge research, and proximity to the tech industry. Stanford’s CS department is one of the most highly regarded in the country, and its location in Silicon Valley creates unusually strong pipelines to internships, startups, and major tech employers. Brown is also excellent, but it is usually seen as more distinctive for flexibility and undergraduate-centered academic freedom than for matching Stanford’s scale and industry ecosystem in CS.

On program strength, Stanford has more faculty, and more built-in momentum in areas like AI, systems, theory, HCI, and robotics. For a student who wants to be surrounded by a very large, ambitious tech culture, Stanford usually has the edge. Research access is strong there as an undergrad, especially because so many labs are active and the university has enormous resources, though popular opportunities can still be competitive.

Brown’s CS department is still outstanding and has a very strong reputation, especially for undergraduates. One major advantage is the Open Curriculum, which gives you unusual freedom to combine CS with areas like design, cognitive science, economics, or entrepreneurship without as many distribution requirements. Brown is often a better fit for students who want a more flexible, less pre-professional atmosphere and who value a collaborative campus culture.

For overall undergrad experience in tech, the tradeoff is fairly clear. Stanford offers the stronger all-around launchpad for a traditional tech path, especially if you care about startup culture and industry access during the school year. Brown can be the better fit if you want a top-tier CS education in a more open-ended academic environment where exploration across fields is central rather than secondary.
