Is Boston University or UMass Amherst better for business majors?

I’m a high school junior trying to decide between Boston University and UMass Amherst for business. I want to understand which school is generally considered stronger for business and which one might give me a better overall college experience for that major.

I’m mostly looking for a straightforward comparison of the two programs from a student perspective.

For business, Boston University is generally seen as the stronger option overall, especially for reputation, access to internships in Boston, and employer visibility through Questrom School of Business. UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management is also very well regarded and can be an excellent choice, particularly if cost matters or if you want a bigger campus environment. From a student perspective, the biggest difference is often city-based BU versus traditional college-town UMass, not just ranking.

BU Questrom tends to have an edge in prestige and location. Being in Boston gives students easier access during the school year to finance, consulting, marketing, healthcare, and startup internships, and Questrom has a strong national reputation. The tradeoff is that BU can feel less like a classic campus and more integrated into the city, with a faster-paced atmosphere.

UMass Amherst Isenberg is one of the strongest public business schools in the Northeast and has a particularly solid reputation in areas like finance, accounting, and sport management. Students often like the more traditional campus life, stronger school spirit, and broader college-town experience. Isenberg can be especially attractive if you want a high-value degree at a lower cost, particularly for in-state students.

If the question is simply which school is "better" for business, BU usually gets the nod. If the question is which offers the better overall student experience for a business major, it depends on whether you want Boston internships and an urban setting or a more classic campus with strong value and a respected business program. For many students, BU is the stronger brand, while UMass Amherst is the better deal.
