Boston University vs Emory for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

For undergraduate biology, Emory is usually the stronger overall choice if you want a more undergraduate-focused academic experience. Emory’s biology program benefits from smaller classes, easier access to professors, and very strong research connections through Emory School of Medicine, the CDC, and nearby Atlanta health institutions. Boston University is also strong, especially for research and breadth, but it tends to feel larger and more graduate-heavy.

Academically, both schools offer solid biology coursework, but Emory often stands out for the quality of faculty interaction and advising. Its undergraduate teaching reputation is especially strong, and biology students can plug into research relatively early. If you are interested in pre-med, public health, neuroscience, genetics, or biomedical research, Emory’s ecosystem is especially attractive because of the concentration of health and life sciences resources around campus.

BU has real advantages too. It offers a wider university environment, a bigger city-integrated campus, and extensive lab opportunities through its own medical campus and Boston’s broader biotech and hospital network. For a student who wants a larger, more urban experience and is comfortable being proactive in seeking out professors and research, BU can be excellent.

If the question is which school is better specifically for undergraduate biology, I would lean Emory for most students because of the balance of strong academics, research access, and undergraduate attention. I would lean BU only if you strongly prefer Boston, want the energy of a larger university, or see yourself taking advantage of the city’s broader science and medical landscape very independently.
