Boston College vs. UChicago for economics: which is better for undergrad economics?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and UChicago for undergrad economics. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally better if I want a solid economics education and good preparation for internships or grad school.

I’m a high school senior and economics is the major I’m most interested in right now, so I want to make a smart choice based on the program itself rather than just overall ranking.

For undergraduate economics, UChicago is generally the stronger choice if you are deciding based mainly on the economics program itself. Its economics department is one of the most influential in the world, the major is especially rigorous and theory-driven, and the school has exceptional placement into top PhD programs, research roles, consulting, and finance. Boston College is still very good, especially if you want a strong undergraduate focus with good access to business-oriented opportunities in Boston, but it is not usually considered on the same tier as UChicago for economics specifically.

At UChicago, economics is a signature strength of the university. The department is famous for price theory, econometrics, and analytical rigor, and undergrads benefit from a campus culture where economics is central rather than just one strong department among many. If you think you may want graduate study in economics, quantitative policy, or highly selective research assistant roles after college, UChicago usually gives you a clearer edge.

Boston College offers a respected economics major with solid teaching and good outcomes, especially for students interested in finance, business, policy, or staying in the Northeast job market. Being near Boston can help with semester internships and networking, which matters if you want practical experience during the school year. BC may also feel more balanced if you want strong academics without the same level of intensity UChicago is known for.

Choose UChicago if your priority is the strongest economics training, especially for rigorous analysis, elite grad school preparation, or high-level econ-related recruiting. Choose Boston College if you want a strong but less intense economics experience, easier access to Boston-area internships, and a campus environment that may feel more rounded socially and academically. If the question is purely which school is better for undergrad economics, the answer is UChicago.
