At Boston College, the Boston-area setting is the central practical advantage. Hospitals, research institutions, clinics, and community-health organizations are nearby, so students can seek sustained volunteering, patient-facing work, shadowing, or research beyond campus. That access is valuable only when a student is proactive: transportation, scheduling, applications, and competition for opportunities are real parts of the process. A self-directed student who enjoys navigating a city and building connections over time could make especially strong use of BC’s location.

Notre Dame is compelling for a student who learns best in a cohesive campus culture and wants pre-med preparation to feel integrated with their undergraduate community. Students should still expect demanding science courses and should actively seek clinical exposure, research, and service rather than assuming those pieces will assemble themselves.

For GPA, neither school should be chosen because it is presumed to be “easier.” The more important question is where you can realistically thrive in introductory science classes, use office hours, find collaborative peers, and maintain balance while preparing for the MCAT and building experiences outside class.

Choose Boston College when the prospect of regularly using Boston as an extension of your education feels energizing, especially if urban health exposure is important to you.
