How does the campus environment at Amherst compare to UPenn?
I'm trying to get a feel for what daily life is like at each school beyond the academics. Amherst seems smaller and more residential, while UPenn looks more urban and busy, but I want to understand how that actually affects the student experience.
I'm especially interested in the overall vibe, how social the campus feels, and whether students tend to spend most of their time on campus or in the surrounding area.

The day-to-day feel is quite different: Amherst is a small, residential liberal arts campus where student life is centered heavily on campus, while Penn is a larger urban university where campus and city life blend together.
At Amherst, most students spend a lot of their time on campus or at nearby Five College events. The campus is compact, residential, and intentionally community-oriented, so it is common for people to eat together, go to talks or performances, and know a large share of the student body at least by recognition. Social life can feel close-knit and active, but also a bit insular if you want a lot of separation between school and personal life.
At Penn, the campus is still very active socially, but the energy is different. There are plenty of on-campus traditions, clubs, Greek life, and student events, yet students also regularly go into Center City and nearby neighborhoods. Because Penn is preprofessional and urban, there is often more movement in students’ schedules: classes, club meetings, internships, research, dinners off campus, and city plans all mix together.
The vibe also differs in tone. Amherst tends to feel quieter, more reflective, and more intimate, with stronger emphasis on discussion-based community and residential life. Penn tends to feel more outward-facing, ambitious, and high-energy. If you want a campus that feels like its own self-contained world, Amherst fits that much more closely. If you want campus life plus a major city woven into everyday life, Penn offers that in a way Amherst really cannot.
