Amherst vs Tufts for biology: which is better for an undergraduate pre-med student?

I’m trying to decide between Amherst and Tufts and I’m leaning toward biology, possibly on a pre-med track. Both seem strong academically, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which one would give me a better overall experience for biology classes, research, and pre-med prep.

I’m mainly looking at the schools as a current high school senior trying to understand which one is the stronger fit for an undergrad biology major.

For an undergraduate biology major on a pre-med path, Tufts usually has the edge if you want easier access to medical-center resources, broader life sciences offerings, and a more built-in pre-health environment. Amherst is excellent academically and can be a great choice, but its strengths are more tied to the liberal arts model, very small classes, and cross-registration opportunities rather than having a large university-style biology and pre-med ecosystem on campus.

Tufts benefits from being a research university with a strong biology department, multiple related majors, and proximity to major Boston-area hospitals. For pre-med students, that often means more straightforward access to clinical volunteering, shadowing, public health opportunities, and lab research during the school year. Amherst has strong science teaching and research too, but the scale is smaller and clinical access is less immediate because of its location.

If your priority is close faculty attention, discussion-heavy classes, and a tight-knit academic setting, Amherst is very appealing. Its biology program is respected, and the Five College Consortium adds options at places like UMass Amherst, which can expand course selection. That said, for a student who already expects to pursue pre-med, Tufts is often the more practical fit because the advising structure, surrounding healthcare network, and volume of relevant opportunities are simply deeper.

One important nuance is GPA and support. Amherst’s smaller environment can make it easier to build strong relationships with professors for recommendations and mentoring, which matters a lot for med school. But Tufts is also very accustomed to pre-med students and offers the kind of infrastructure many applicants want from day one.

So if you want the stronger overall undergrad biology plus pre-med setup, I’d lean Tufts. If you want a more classic liberal arts college experience and are excited by intimate classes over institutional scale, Amherst can still be the better personal fit.
