Is Amherst or Williams better for pre-med students?

I’m trying to decide between Amherst and Williams, and pre-med is one of the biggest factors for me. I know both are strong schools academically, but I’m having a hard time comparing them for the pre-med path.

I’m mostly thinking about things like support, advising, and whether one might make it easier to stay on track for med school.

For pre-med, Amherst and Williams are both excellent, and neither has a clear overall advantage that would make one obviously “better” for medical school placement. Both have very strong science departments, small classes, close faculty access, and dedicated health professions advising. The better choice usually comes down to fit: Amherst tends to offer more flexibility through its open curriculum, while Williams often stands out for especially structured academic support and strong undergraduate science engagement.

Amherst can be appealing if you want freedom in how you build your schedule outside the core pre-med requirements. Since there are no general education requirements, it can be easier to balance chemistry, biology, physics, and math with humanities or social science interests without feeling boxed in. Amherst also has access to the Five College Consortium, which can expand course options and research possibilities.

Williams is often attractive for students who want a very cohesive campus environment and close mentoring. Its tutorial system and strong emphasis on undergraduate teaching can be a real plus in demanding pre-med courses, especially if you learn best through discussion and direct faculty interaction. Williams also has a strong record of placing students into research and thesis work, which can help if you want deeper academic science experience before applying to med school.

For advising, both schools provide pre-health support, committee processes, and guidance on course sequencing, MCAT timing, and application strategy. If you want more curricular freedom and access to the broader Five College ecosystem, Amherst may fit better. If you want a more tightly knit residential experience with especially intensive faculty engagement, Williams may have the edge.
