How do Michigan and Berkeley compare in prestige for college applications and job recruiting?

I’m trying to understand how these two schools are viewed by admissions officers and employers. Both seem very well respected, but people talk about them differently depending on the area.

I want to know whether one is generally seen as more prestigious than the other, or if it mostly depends on the major and career path.

Michigan and Berkeley are both elite public universities, but Berkeley usually has a slight edge in overall academic prestige, especially nationally and internationally. In college admissions, both are seen as highly rigorous and selective, and neither will be viewed as a weak option by graduate or professional schools. For job recruiting, the difference is usually small and often comes down more to your major, internships, GPA, and location than the name alone.

Berkeley tends to carry more prestige in fields like computer science, engineering, math, economics, and academic research. It also has especially strong recognition on the West Coast and in tech-heavy industries. Michigan is extremely respected across the country and is particularly powerful in business, engineering, economics, political science, and pre-professional pathways, with a very strong alumni network and broad employer reach.

For recruiting, Berkeley may have a stronger pull in Silicon Valley and certain research-oriented or quantitative fields. Michigan often has an advantage in Midwest recruiting and does very well with consulting, finance, engineering, and large national employers. Ross, for example, is a major draw in business recruiting, while Berkeley’s EECS and related programs are exceptionally strong in tech.

For college applications after undergrad, admissions officers will generally view both schools as top-tier institutions. They will care much more about what you did there: course rigor, grades, research, leadership, recommendations, and outcomes.
