Is Yale or Northwestern better for journalism undergrad?

I'm trying to decide between Yale and Northwestern and journalism is one of the main things I'm interested in. I know Northwestern is known for Medill, but Yale also has a strong overall reputation and good student media opportunities.

I'm mainly trying to understand which school is the better fit for someone who wants to get serious journalism training as an undergraduate.

For undergraduate journalism training, Northwestern is usually the stronger choice. Medill is one of the most established journalism schools in the country, it offers a dedicated undergraduate journalism major, and its curriculum is built around reporting, writing, multimedia, and hands-on experiential learning from the start.

Yale is excellent overall, but it does not have a standalone undergraduate journalism school or major in the same way. At Yale, students interested in journalism usually build that path through English, Political Science, History, or another major while gaining experience through student publications like the Yale Daily News and other media outlets.

If your priority is formal, structured journalism preparation, Northwestern has a clear advantage. Medill gives undergrads direct access to faculty with industry experience, specialized courses in areas like investigative reporting and audience engagement, and strong internship and professional networking pipelines, especially in Chicago, which is a major media market.

Yale can still be a very good place for an aspiring journalist, especially if you want a broad liberal arts education first and see journalism as one part of a wider academic experience. Its student journalism culture is strong and well respected, and Yale’s name can open doors, but the training is generally less pre-professional and more self-directed than at Northwestern.

So the practical distinction is this: Northwestern is better for someone who wants serious journalism training built into the undergraduate curriculum, while Yale is better for someone who wants a more traditional liberal arts route and plans to pursue journalism through campus media and electives rather than a dedicated journalism program.
