How does social life at Harvard compare to Penn for an undergraduate student?
I'm trying to get a feel for what day-to-day student life is like at each school. I know both are academically intense, but I keep hearing that the social vibe can be pretty different.
I'm mostly wondering how students actually spend time outside of classes, since that seems like a big part of whether a college feels like a good fit.

The social life is meaningfully different. Harvard tends to feel more residential, more house-centered after freshman year, and a bit less overtly pre-professional in everyday student culture. Penn is usually described as more social in a visible, fast-paced way, with stronger pre-professional energy and a bigger role for Greek life, nightlife, and going out in Philadelphia.
At Harvard, a lot of undergraduate social life happens through dorms first and then the residential Houses, plus student organizations, performance groups, clubs, and small gatherings. Finals clubs exist and get attention, but they do not define most students’ social lives. Because Harvard is in Cambridge and not in the middle of a traditional campus party scene, day-to-day life often feels centered on meals with friends, club meetings, House events, coffee runs, and events around the Yard and Square.
At Penn, social life is often more extroverted and structured around campus groups, Greek life, apartment or house parties, and the city. Greek life has historically been more visible at Penn than at Harvard, even though plenty of students are not involved in it. Penn also has a reputation for students blending social life with career-oriented clubs, networking, and pre-professional communities in business, finance, tech, and consulting.
For day-to-day feel, Harvard can come across as a little more insulated and community-based, especially once students settle into their Houses. Penn often feels more energetic and outward-facing, with students taking advantage of being in Philadelphia and with a stronger sense that people are busy building both a social and professional life at the same time.
