What is the best major for pre-med at the University of Chicago?

At the University of Chicago, there is no single “best” pre-med major. The most practical choice is usually the subject you can do well in while fitting in the medical school prerequisites, because UChicago students can apply to med school from many majors and the College does not have a dedicated pre-med major. Common choices are Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and sometimes Neuroscience-related tracks because they overlap more naturally with courses like general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, and biochemistry.

If you want the simplest scheduling path, Biological Sciences is often the most straightforward option at UChicago. It aligns well with pre-med requirements, gives you regular access to relevant lab science coursework, and is one of the more common majors for students planning on medicine. That said, UChicago’s Core Curriculum is substantial, so even science majors need to plan carefully, and a major with too many extra requirements can make balancing GPA, research, and extracurriculars harder.

A non-science major can also be a very smart choice if it is your strongest academic area. UChicago is known for encouraging intellectual exploration, and med schools do not require a biology major as long as you complete the prerequisite courses. For example, a student could major in Public Policy, Psychology, English, or Sociology and still complete the pre-med track, though that usually takes more intentional course planning from the first year onward.
