Is a math major at the University of Chicago a good choice for pre-med or finance students?

Yes. A math major at the University of Chicago can work very well for either pre-med or finance, but it is usually best if you build the rest of your coursework very intentionally. UChicago’s math department is extremely strong and tends to be rigorous and theory-heavy, which is a plus for analytical careers, and the college’s flexible Core plus elective structure makes it possible to add pre-med sciences or finance-related classes.

For pre-med, math is absolutely a viable major at UChicago as long as you complete the required science courses alongside it. A math major can stand out, but the challenge is workload management because UChicago math and pre-med science sequences are both demanding.

For finance, math is a very practical major at UChicago. Employers in finance generally value quantitative strength, and UChicago has a strong reputation in economics, statistics, and related analytical fields, plus access to recruiting for investment banking, trading, quantitative finance, and consulting. If finance is the goal, math becomes even more useful when paired with courses in economics, statistics, computer science, or financial mathematics.

The one real caution is that UChicago math is not the easiest version of math you could study anywhere. Some tracks are highly proof-based and abstract, so if you like math mainly in a computational or applied way, you would want to look closely at the course sequences and choose a path that fits your strengths.
