What should I include in a UChicago portfolio submission for my application?

I'm applying to UChicago and thinking about submitting a portfolio, but I'm not sure what kinds of materials are best to include. I have a mix of academic work and a few creative pieces, and I want to make sure the portfolio actually helps my application instead of feeling random.

I'm mainly looking for guidance on what a strong portfolio should show about me.

For UChicago, a portfolio should add something your main application does not already show. The strongest submission usually highlights a clear area of unusual strength, curiosity, or originality, not just a grab bag of your best school assignments. UChicago is especially receptive to work that shows serious intellectual engagement, creative risk, or sustained commitment to a field.

A strong portfolio should feel cohesive. If you have mixed academic and creative work, only include pieces that point to the same story about you, such as deep interest in literary analysis, independent math exploration, research-minded thinking, or original artistic voice. Randomly combining, for example, a lab report, a short story, and a debate outline can make the submission feel unfocused unless they clearly connect to one theme.

Good materials can include substantial research papers, independent projects, analytical writing, original creative writing, visual art, music compositions, film work, or other serious work developed beyond normal class requirements. The key is quality over quantity. A few polished pieces with brief context about what they are, why you made them, and whether they were done for class, competition, publication, or independent study will help admissions readers understand their significance.

Try to show depth, not just talent. UChicago tends to value how you think, so an academic portfolio should reveal your reasoning, questions, or methods, not just a finished product. A creative portfolio should show distinctive voice and intentional choices.

If a piece is long, submitting an excerpt or abstract can work better than overwhelming the reader. Include only your strongest work, and avoid anything that repeats what is already obvious from grades, activities, or the main essay unless the portfolio gives a much richer sense of your ability.
