What extracurricular involvement does the University of Chicago typically expect from applicants?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out how much emphasis UChicago tends to place on extracurriculars. I’ve heard it values intellectual curiosity and depth, but I’m not sure what that looks like in an application.

I want to understand whether they expect a long list of activities or more of a few things with real commitment.

UChicago does not expect a huge laundry list of extracurriculars. What usually reads best there is depth, initiative, and a clear intellectual or personal throughline, especially if your activities show curiosity, originality, or sustained commitment over time. A few meaningful commitments can be stronger than ten shallow memberships, particularly at a school that is known for valuing serious engagement with ideas.

They are not looking for one particular set of activities, and you do not need to have research, national awards, or a perfect “spike” to be viable. What matters more is whether your involvement shows commitment, contribution, and the way you think. If you love math, that might show up through contests, tutoring, and personal problem-solving projects. If you love literature, it might be a reading journal, school paper work, a book club you started, or serious writing outside class.

Because UChicago’s application puts real weight on essays, your extracurriculars matter partly through how coherently they connect to the rest of your application. The strongest profiles often make an admissions reader think, “This student genuinely cares about this set of ideas and has acted on that interest.” So aim less for maximum quantity and more for real investment, evidence of impact, and a profile that feels distinctly like you.
