What is the residential life culture like at the University of Chicago?

UChicago’s residential life is unusually central to student culture, and the house system shapes day-to-day life much more than at many colleges. Most first-years live in residence halls tied to small “houses,” which function as built-in communities with their own traditions, study breaks, intramural teams, and social events. In practice, that means dorm life often feels close-knit, a little quirky, and very participatory rather than anonymous.

People absolutely study hard, but residential culture also includes house dinners, game nights, formals, Scav-related chaos, and a lot of low-key hanging out in lounges.
